You learn nothing from life if you believe you’re always right!

Hyderabad

I’m sitting at the corner desk I just set up in my mom’s bedroom so I can stay with her all night and keep an eye on her.

Arrived in Hyderabad today around 9 AM. I left home yesterday at 10:45 AM, flew to Doha with a two-hour layover, and then landed here. The weather is warm, mildly sunny, and a bit misty – not too hot or cold. My parents asked me to wear flip-flops inside because they were worried I’d catch a cold from the marble floors, but I told them I’d just left 4-degree weather yesterday, so this feels fine. Before I left, my friend joked that I was escaping the extreme cold this year by coming to a warmer place. I don’t mind the cold, but when you’ve experienced it, you learn to appreciate warmth, and now that I’m here, I really do!

I’m so grateful to my job for letting me take a couple of weeks off at the last minute to care for my mom. The whole family is still adjusting to her starting chemo about four weeks ago. I’m even more thankful that I can be here to make homemade meals for both of my parents. Today, my mom said she never thought I’d be able to make roti or chapati for her, and both my parents were so appreciative. Honestly, there’s nothing more I want than to make them happy and keep them healthy, and I’m just glad I can do this for them.

If you’re able, spend time with your parents. Cook for them, talk to them, love them, make them laugh. They don’t need much from you, just your time. It’s said that we spend about 90% of the time we’ll ever have with our parents before we turn 20, and the remaining 10% gets spread over the rest of our lives. Those teenage years weren’t always kind to them, but while they’re still here, make the most of it. Everyone else – colleagues, friends, neighbours, partners—will eventually move on, but family is irreplaceable.

I’m getting a bit carried away now, so I’ll stop here. Reflecting on my day, I feel grateful and content knowing I spent time with my parents and cared for them. I’m going to bed tonight as the happiest person in the world.
